Stand Up! for Democracy in DC (Free DC) mourns the unexpected death of our friend U.S. Representative Elijah Cummings (D-MD-07).
Congressman Cummings represented Baltimore, Maryland, since April 16, 1996 and most recently served as the chair of the powerful House Committee on Oversight and Reform.
He was a life-long civil rights advocate and a passionate DC statehood supporter. He delivered on his commitment to hold the first hearing on statehood in more than 25 years in the House of Representatives. His committee held a hearing on HR 51, the Washington, DC Admission Act, on September 19, 2019.
Rep. Cumming’s strong commitment to justice and equality will never be forgotten.
The Washington Post ran this obituary: Elijah Cummings, Baltimore congressman and civil rights leader, dies at 68.
