 BACKGROUND:  April 16th – DC Emancipation Day – is an official holiday in the District of Columbia.  On this day, we honor our ancestors – enslaved persons who were first freed in 1862, nine months before Emancipation Day on January 1, 1863.  Additionally, we use this day to advocate for political freedom through achieving DC statehood.

 THEME: 150th Anniversary of the 15th Amendment for African American Men’s Right to Vote
