Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton's Press Conference

Written by

Joint press conference of Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser on July 10, 2017.

As chair of the DC Statehood Committee of the Greater DC Chapter of the National Action Network and executive director of Stand Up! for Democracy in DC (Free DC), I attended by invitation a joint press conference called by Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser.

The conference was called to present eight national organizations that will stand up against the assaults by the current Republican-dominated U.S. Congress on many local laws of Washington, DC.  These "riders" on the Fiscal Year 2018 Appropriations Bill will change many local laws approved by our local DC Council.

Delegate Norton started the press conference by saying that these groups will help DC defend our local laws.  Some of these changes would target DC gun safety laws allowing out-of-state permits to be legal in DC; end the Death With Dignity law that allows terminally ill patients to end their lives with a doctor's approval; end DC local funding for abortions for low-income women; stop budget autonomy which lets DC spend it own local tax money the way it chooses and ends DC's laws against flushing wet wipes for personal hygiene which would severely clog up DC's water pipe system.

Delegate Norton and Mayor Bowser said they resent the Congress' overturning DC local laws, opposing the DC Home Rule Act.  The group pledged to work on DC statehood, which would protect DC from this type of congressional interference.  The presser ended with Mayor Bowser presenting Ms. Norton with a special DC "End Taxation Without Representation" license plate that read "LEAVE US ALONE."

Del. Norton and these eight organizations and others will fight to remove these "riders" from the FY2018 Appropriations Bill.  Get ready, People!
