Comparing Congress to the British Crown and invoking the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., D.C. Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly was arrested yesterday as part of a nonviolent protest in favor of D.C. statehood.
Kelly and 37 others briefly blockaded an intersection near the Capitol at lunchtime yesterday, practicing civil disobedience to dramatize what Kelly termed Congress's "oppression" of the District.
After the mayor and a group of about 200 statehood supporters marched up Capitol Hill, Kelly and those who wanted to be arrested occupied the intersection of Independence and New Jersey avenues.
