Down With Obama

The District is ticked off at President Barack Obama.

On Monday, staffers from 10 local and national civic groups will protest the colonial status of the District. They will engage in a limited general strike for statehood by arriving at work 15 minutes late, followed by longer work stoppages — 30, 45 and 60 minutes late on Aug. 1, Sept. 10 and Oct. 1, respectively.

With fewer than a dozen words Monday, President Barack Obama made his most definitive statement to date in favor of District statehood, delighting both loyal supporters and longtime advocates who have questioned his commitment to D.C. voting rights.

13 Arrested in Protest at White House

Shouting D.C. residents rallied at the White House yesterday to protest the virtual suspension of the city's home rule that would occur if President Clinton signs the budget bill on his desk. Before the hour-long protest ended, 13 people had been arrested, and civic and religious leaders declared the much-promoted event a success.
