Six city residents who were arrested for advocating for D.C. statehood in the visitors gallery of the U.S. House of Representatives went on trial in D.C. Superior Court yesterday, charged with disruption of Congress.
During a debate of the D.C. appropriations bill on the House floor July 26, the group began shouting, "D.C. Votes No! Free D.C.!," and other slogans of the statehood movement. House security guards escorted the protesters from the gallery.
It was the second time this year that such protests have been made during debates on the District. The defendants in the earlier case were acquitted.
