Statehood News (221)

The issue of statehood and voting representation for the District of Columbia seeped into the 2016 presidential race this week, when Republican candidate Donald Trump said he wouldn’t mind allowing D.C. to have a vote in the House of Representatives.

A divided D.C. Council voted Tuesday to accept a constitution largely drafted by Mayor Muriel E. Bowser’s office as the foundation for its bid to become the 51st state. But lawmakers also required the possible future state to hold a constitutional convention to allow residents to tweak the document as they see fit.

D.C. voters will no doubt approve a ballot measure declaring their wish for statehood this Election Day. But don’t start to wonder about its prospects for getting anywhere in Congress.

Statehood Campaign Looks to November

Written by

The Statehood Yes! Campaign, intended to convince District residents to vote for D.C.’s statehood in a November referendum and consequently convince Congress to vote on the issue, launched last Wednesday.

D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser, speaking Tuesday at the Democratic National Convention, confidently predicted victory — and soon — in the District’s four-decade fight for statehood.

As District leaders advocate for statehood and full voting rights this summer, some pols are already looking to the fall.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser asked the Democratic National Committee to add D.C. statehood to its platform Tuesday.

For the last several years, I have marked Independence Day by making note of the fact that taxation without representation is alive and well in Washington, D.C. today.

President Obama will deliver his final State of the Union Address in a few days and District leaders and residents don’t want him to forget about the District of Columbia.

Another D.C. resident has voiced his support for statehood: President Barack Obama.
