Washington, DC—(February 28, 2018) After many concerted efforts, members of Stand Up! for Democracy in DC (Free DC) and other statehood supporters profusely thanked both U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and U.S. Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) for their support of DC statehood legislation. Though constant ongoing efforts had been made to gain support, Stand Up! / Free DC pointed out that several members had just visited the office of Sen. Harris on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2018, as part of its annual Valentine/Frederick Douglass Birthday card drop on Capitol Hill.

The support of these two senators brought the number of cosponsors of S. 1278, the Washington, DC Admission Act, to 22 – an unprecedented number in the U.S. Senate.

"We know that our DC Statehood Valentine card delivery to Sen. Harris’ office, our second such recent visit, along with our constant Tweets and telephone calls played an important role in gaining her, our sister Howardite’s, co-sponsorship. Several group members are Howard University graduates as is Sen. Harris," commented Stand Up! Executive Director Anise Jenkins.

Stand Up! / Free Ambassador Evanna Powell expressed her delight and stressed that “gaining both senators’ support was extremely important, giving us a sense of gaining great momentum.”

"We were a little disappointed that Sen. Harris was not in her office when we paid our visit, but her wonderful staff obviously gave her our informational packet on DC statehood and the Valentine which asked for her support. This is a great day! Our collective work continues to pay off,” added Jenkins.
